Object storage

Object storage is at the heart of Ceph. You can store millions of objects through language bindings for C, C++, Python, PHP and Java or use the S3 compatible REST gateway.

Block storage

Based on the Object storage of Ceph it provides a fully distributed Block Device with integration inti Qemu (KVM), libvirt, CloudStack and OpenStack.

File storage

A fully distributed POSIX-compliant file system striped over replicated objects in the Ceph cluster. You can store large amounts of data and scale when needed.

More about Ceph

Ceph is a Open Source distributed object store. It runs on commodity hardware providing a fault tolerant and self-healing storage platform. With Object, Block and File storage it truly is a unified storage platform without a vendor lock-in.

At 42on we have over 5 years of Ceph experience and contributed many features and bugfixes to Ceph and the eco-system around it.

Our main person is Wido den Hollander who has extensive experience with building and running Ceph clusters for businesses, organizations and government agencies. These range from Terabytes into the Petabytes.

IPv4 exhausted

All devices connected to the internet require a IP address. The current protocol, IPv4, is 32-bits long and provides about 3.5 billion of available addresses. Due to the growth of the internet the available IPv4 addresses have been exhausted.

Next generation

IPv6 is the next generation IP protocol. It has been designed to accomodate the growth of the internet for the foreseeable future. IPv6 addresses are 128-bits long which is approximately 3.4×1038 addresses.

IPv6 eliminates the need for translation techniques like NAT which improves the flow of packets. With a lot of connections and traffic flowing NAT causes issues. By eliminating the need for NAT the user experience is enhanced.

More about IPv6

The exhaustion of the IPv4 pool was already foreseen in the 1990s.

With the rapid growth of the Internet after commercialization in the 1990s, it became evident that far more addresses than the IPv4 address space has available were necessary to connect new devices in the future. By 1998, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) had formalized the successor protocol. IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, theoretically allowing 2128 or approximately 3.4×1038 addresses.

Next to the large number of addresses IPv6 provides multiple features over IPv4. NAT is no longer required, IPv6 performs MTU path detection and allows for easier routing on internal networks

Choose 42on for Ceph and IPv6

Why choose 42on?

We are a company with a lot of knowledge. We love a few things: Open Source, Ceph and IPv6. As a company we provide high quality training and consultancy for both Ceph and IPv6.

When we say we love Open Source we truly mean that. We are actively involved in the open source communities of Ceph, Apache CloudStack, libvirt and multiple other projects.

Take a look at the Github page or blog of Wido den Hollander and you can see that we are actively involved in open source.

Ceph and IPv6 training

We provide high quality Ceph and IPv6 training

Basic Ceph training is provided in a 2-day course. During the course theory and lab experiments with Virtual Machines train students on how Ceph works internally and how to work with it.

During the 2-day IPv6 training course IT-staff can be trained on how IPv6 works, how it should be deployed and what the benefits are over IPv4. This is done using theory and experiments with Virtual Machines.

Contact us for availability on both Ceph and IPv6 training.
